Hey guys, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I've got a basic drill/driver combo but thinking I need a good impact driver for the lag bolts and deck screws. Budget's around $150. What do you recommend? I was looking at the Dewalt DCF887 or the Milwaukee M18 Fuel. Heard good things about both.

Welcome to the club Dave! For deck building, either of those will work fine. I'm a retired carpenter now but built plenty of decks in my day. The Dewalt is a workhorse, but the Milwaukee has a bit more torque. I'd go with the Milwaukee M18 Fuel for the 1600 in-lbs. Don't forget to grab a spare battery though, they eat through them quick when driving long screws.

Listen to Paul, he knows his stuff. I'm a contractor and we use the Milwaukee M18 Fuel on every job. That thing is a beast. But if you're on a tight budget, the Dewalt DCF887 is a great tool too. I've seen them on sale for under $100 sometimes. Just make sure you get good bits, don't cheap out on those or you'll strip screws like crazy.

For deck screws, you also want to consider the precision. The Milwaukee has a multi-mode control that lets you adjust speed and power. Great for preventing overdriving. Plus the LED light actually highlights the work area well. If you're particular about finishes, that's a big deal. I'd say Milwaukee all the way.

Thanks everyone! Milwaukee seems the winner. I'll grab the M18 Fuel and some extra batteries. Appreciate the advice!
