Hey guys, I'm a DIYer trying to pick between the DeWalt DCF887 and the Makita XDT16 for general home stuff and maybe some deck building. I've heard good things about both. Anyone have experience with either? Pros/cons?

I'm a garage gearhead and I've used both. DeWalt feels more ergonomic to me, but Makita's 3-speed power is insane. If you're doing a lot of framing or heavy lag bolts, Makita wins. For lighter duty, DeWalt's fine.

As a pro contractor, I've beat the crap out of both. XDT16 has better battery life and stays cooler under heavy use. DeWalt's chuck is slightly better for bit retention. I'd go Makita for the long haul.

I'm with Rick. Makita's build quality is unmatched. Plus the XDT16 has that Auto-Stop feature that saves your wrists if the bit binds. Worth the extra cash IMO.

Thanks for the input! Leaning toward Makita now. Is the XDT16 compatible with the older 18V batteries? I have some from my drill set.
