Hey guys, I'm looking to buy my first impact driver. I do a lot of woodworking and some light construction. I'm torn between the DeWalt 887 and the Makita XDT16. Any advice? I hear both are great but curious which one you'd recommend for a hobbyist.

Been a carpenter for 40 years. I've used both. DeWalt's 887 is solid but the Makita XDT16 has a lot more control for precision work. For woodworking, I'd go Makita. DeWalt feels more like a brute force tool. Just my two cents.

Gotta disagree here. DeWalt all the way. The 887 has never let me down, and the ergonomics are better. Plus, the battery platform is more versatile if you ever get other tools. Makita's fine but DeWalt is the gold standard.

Don't forget safety! I see a lot of guys using impacts without eye pro. Both tools are good, but make sure you get a model with a good belt clip and a quick-change chuck. I've seen too many accidents from loose bits. Check the new Makita, it has an LED light that helps a ton in dark spots.

Thanks for the input! I think I'll go with the Makita for the control. Safety first, Rick! I'll pick up some safety glasses too.
