Hey folks, looking to upgrade my old impact driver and torn between DeWalt and Makita. Mostly doing deck repairs, building shelves, and occasional furniture assembly. DeWalt's XR line looks solid, but Makita's Sub-Compact seems more comfortable for my smaller hands. Anyone have experience with both? Budget around $200 for the tool only.

Bob - I've used both extensively in my shop. For woodworking, Makita's variable speed control is superior for delicate work like cabinet installs. Their 18V Sub-Compact driver won't strip screws as easily. DeWalt has more raw power though - better for lag bolts in deck posts. What's your priority: finesse or brute force?

As a collector, I own 7 impact drivers from both brands. DeWalt's DCF887 is a workhorse but heavy. Makita's XDT16Z has better ergonomics and the quick-shift mode is genius. Pro tip: check if you want to expand your battery ecosystem later. Makita's 18V LXT platform has more tools available IMO.

Weekend warrior here too! I went Makita 2 years ago and LOVE it. The weight difference is noticeable after 3 hours of deck building. DeWalt feels like it could survive a drop from a ladder better tho. Have you checked out Project Farm's YouTube comparison? He tested both to destruction - Makita won for precision, DeWalt for durability.
