I'm looking to upgrade my impact driver. I've been using a cheap one and it's dying on me. I'm torn between the DeWalt DCF887 and the Makita XDT16. I need something that can handle heavy use on renovations, driving big lags into studs and such. Any advice from guys who've used both?

I've got the Makita XDT16 and it's a beast! The triple hammer is no joke. I drove 4 inch screws into treated lumber no problem. Plus the assist mode is great for precise work. DeWalt is good too but I hear the chuck can wobble after a while. Just my 2 cents.

DeWalt all the way! Makita is overrated. I've had my DCF887 for 2 years and it's been rock solid. The ergonomics are better and it's lighter. I had a Makita before and it couldn't handle the torque without stripping screws. Stick with yellow, man.

Thanks guys. I lean towards DeWalt cause I already have their batteries, but the triple hammer on the Makita sounds tempting. Steve, any issues with overheating? I'll be using it all day.

No overheating here, even after driving deck screws for hours. The brushless motor runs cool. But if you're already on DeWalt batteries, that's a big factor. Maybe just grab the DCF887 and see how you like it. You can always return it.
