Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new impact driver. I've been using a DeWalt 887 for years but the new Makita XDT16 looks tempting. Any experience with these two? I do a lot of deck building and framing.

I've retired my 887 after 10 years. Got the Makita XDT16 last month. It's got more torque and the speed control is smoother. But the chucks on DeWalts are tanks. If you drop tools a lot, stick with DeWalt. Makita's chuck is fine, but not as robust.

I'm loyal to DeWalt. The 887 is proven. But I haven't tried the XDT16. I do know Makita has some battery issues with older batteries not working on new tools. Make sure you have newer batteries if you switch. I'd say test both in store if you can.

Precision matters to me. The Makita has better trigger control for light work. But the DeWalt has better runtime with the PowerStack batteries. If you need consistent torque for lag bolts, DeWalt. For varied fasteners, Makita. I'd go Makita because of the brushless motor.

Thanks guys. I think I'll rent both for a day and see which feels better in my hand. Leaning towards the Makita based on the newer tech though. Appreciate the advice!
