Hey guys, ran into a clearance at Home Depot - Milwaukee M18 Surge hydraulic driver for $99! I know these are usually $180+. I snatched one but I'm wondering if the hydraulic is really all that? I do a lot of deck building and framing. Thoughts?

Dang, $99 for a Surge? That's a steal! I'm a Makita guy myself but even I'd pick that up. Hydraulic drivers are way quieter and smoother. For decking, you'll love it - no more rattling your ears off. Only downside is they're a bit heavier, but for that price, who cares? Good find!

Nice score! Just FYI, the Surge has a bit less torque than a standard impact. It's about 450 ft-lbs vs 1500ish for the Fuel. But for driving screws and lag bolts on decks, it's plenty. The real win is the oil-impulse mechanism - less cam-out and way better control. I use mine for cabinetry. You won't regret it.

Thanks guys! So the torque drop isn't a big deal? I mostly do big screws. Might keep it. Mike, you're right about the weight, but man it's quiet. Hank, good point on cam-out - I've stripped a few screws with my old impact.

Honestly, for framing and decks, you'll be fine. I've seen guys frame whole houses with the Surge. Just keep a normal impact handy for big lags if needed. But for $99, that's a no-brainer. You could resell it for more if you don't like it.
