So there I was, driving some 3" screws into a stud with my impact driver. No big deal, right? Well, the bit slipped and the screw went flying. Next thing I know, I feel a sharp pain in my eye. Turns out a tiny piece of metal or maybe the screw itself grazed my cornea. Spent 4 hours in the ER. Doc said I was lucky. Don't be a dumbass like me – wear safety glasses! Even for a 'quick job'. Anyone else have a close call?

Hank, glad you're okay. As a safety inspector, I see this all the time. People think eye protection is only for grinding or sawing, but driving screws can be just as dangerous. Those bits can shatter, screws can fly, and dust can get in your eyes. Always wear ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses. And if you're doing overhead work, use goggles. No excuses. Also, make sure your bit is in good condition and the screw head matches the bit. A worn bit is a accident waiting to happen.

I'm all for safety, but I gotta say, I've been driving screws for 20 years and never had an issue. Maybe you just need better technique? Use a magnetic bit holder and don't push too hard. Also, if you're using an impact driver, the torque can be unpredictable. I prefer a drill with a clutch for smaller screws. But yeah, eye protection is cheap insurance. I keep a pair on my bench at all times. Just my 2 cents.

Back in my day, we didn't even have impact drivers. Just a good old Yankee screwdriver. But even then, I had a close call with a sliver of metal. Now I always wear safety glasses, even when I'm just tightening a loose cabinet hinge. It only takes a second for something to go wrong. Hank, thanks for sharing. It's a good reminder for all of us. And Steve, thanks for the ANSI tip. I'll check my glasses to make sure they're rated.
