Angle grinder for deck building - which one?

Hey everyone, I'm finally building my deck this summer (about 300 sq ft) and I need an angle grinder for cutting some metal brackets and maybe some tile work later. I'm just a weekend DIYer, so I don't want to break the bank but I also don't want junk. Which grinder should I get? Corded or battery? I've got a mix of tools from different brands.

For that kind of work you can't go wrong with a Makita 4.5" corded grinder. It's cheap, like $60, and will last forever. I've had mine for 10 years still going strong. Cordless is convenient but for a deck project you'll want the consistent power and no battery swapping.

I agree with Steve959. For metal cutting, corded is the way to go. I've burned through plenty of cheap grinders on jobsites. Spend a little extra on a good one - the Dewalt DWE402 is what I use daily. It's $100ish but has a great guard adjustment and is built tough. Also get some cutoff wheels from a brand like Norton or Diablo, not the cheapo ones.

Thanks guys! I think I'll go with the Makita corded then, since it's cheaper and I don't use grinders that often. Bob, I'll look for those wheels too. One more question: do I need a variable speed one for tile? Or can I just get a single speed?

For tile you really do want variable speed. You need slow RPMs to avoid chipping. The Makita 9565CV is variable speed and only about $20 more. That might be a better buy if you're doing tile soon. Or you can just use a cheap variable speed controller from Harbor Freight but it's not ideal.
