Hey all, I'm about to start building a cedar deck in my backyard and need to get a grinder for rounding over edges and smoothing some cuts. I've got a budget of around $150. What would you recommend? I've seen a lot about angle grinders but not sure what specs to look for. Any advice?

For a deck, you can't go wrong with a decent 4-1/2" angle grinder. I'd look for something with a variable speed if you can, cuz cedar is soft and you don't want to tear it up. I've got a Bosch 1375A, it's cheap and does the job, but if you want variable speed, check out the DeWalt DWE43114. It's a bit over your budget but worth it.

I've got more grinders than I care to admit, lol. Honestly, for occasional DIY, a corded angle grinder from Harbor Freight works fine. But since you're building a deck, get something reliable. I'd say the Makita 9557PB is a solid choice, around $80, and it lasts forever. Just grab some flap discs for smoothing, they'll be your best friend.

Make sure you get a grinder with a paddle switch so it's easier to control. I've seen too many folks lose a grip on a slide switch. Also, consider getting a dust extraction attachment if you're working near the house. Cedar dust can be a mess. I use a Metabo HPT G12SR4, good price and has a nice side handle. Don't forget to wear a face shield, not just safety glasses!

Thanks y'all! Some great tips. I think I'll go with the DeWalt variable speed, even if it stretches my budget a bit. And I'll definitely get a face shield, thanks Wendy. Appreciate the help!
