Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new angle grinder for home projects. I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt DWE402 and the Makita 9557PB. I'll be cutting metal and occasional masonry. Any advice on which one is better? I've heard mixed reviews.

I've had the Makita for years. It's a tank. The 9557PB is a bit older but it's reliable as hell, and Makita's power switch is way more comfortable than DeWalt's paddle. For home use, you can't go wrong. But if you're going to be doing a lot of cutting, the DeWalt has a bit more power and the dust ejection is better. Just my two cents.

I use both on job sites. For heavy daily use, DeWalt wins for durability and power. The DWE402 has a higher amp motor (10A vs 7.5A) and better side handle placement. But the Makita is lighter and easier to handle for overhead work. Honestly, for a homeguy, either will be fine. But if you're hacking off metal all day, go with the DeWalt. Also, check if you have batteries for either brand - going cordless might be an option.

Thanks for the replies! I'm leaning towards the DeWalt because I already have DeWalt batteries and might get the cordless version. But the Makita does seem lighter. Any thoughts on the cordless versions? The DWE402 is corded, but they have the DCG412B brushless. Should I just get that instead?

The cordless DeWalt is great, but keep in mind it eats batteries fast if you're cutting heavy steel. With the 5Ah battery you'll get maybe 20 minutes of continuous cutting. If you have spare batteries, that's fine. For a hobbyist, it's convenient because no cord. But if you're doing a long session, you'll end up switching batteries a lot. Make sure you have at least two batteries.
