Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new 4-1/2" angle grinder. I've got a DeWalt 20V line already, but I've heard Makita's grinders are smoother. Main use is cutting and grinding metal for fab projects. Which one holds up better in the long run? Don't want to drop $150 and regret it.

Dave, I've used both over the years. For heavy grinding, Makita is my go-to. The paddle switch is easier to feather, and the vibration dampening is noticable after a full day. DeWaults are fine for cutting, but the Makita just feels more solid in the hand. Check out the XAG17ZU—brushless, slow start, and it'll take a beating.

Disagree with Wendy. DeWalt's 20V MAX XR grinder has never let me down. I've repiped an entire HVAC system with mine, dropping it off ladders, and it still runs like new. Plus the brake stops the wheel instantly—safety first! Makita's are good but I've seen the gearboxes eat themselves. DeWalt all the way.

Wendy's right. I'm an apprentice and my master has two Makita 18V grinders that are older than me. They still run smooth. Meanwhile he bought a DeWalt last year and it smoked after a week of heavy use. But maybe he got a lemon. I'd go Makita for reliability.

Thanks for the input. Leaning towards Makita now, but I'll see if I can get a demo at the store. Safety brake is nice, but I want something that lasts. Appreciate the help!
