Hey everyone, quick question. I see a lot of guys at work skipping safety glasses when using angle grinders. I know it's a pain but I've seen too many close calls. What do you guys use for eye protection? I've been using the standard safety glasses but they fog up and get scratched easily. Any recommendations?

Ah, the old foggy glasses problem. I've been there. I switched to a full-face shield over my glasses. It's a bit bulky but it keeps everything out. Plus, it covers your whole face, so when a disc shatters, you don't get shards in your cheeks or forehead either. I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight and it's lasted years. Just make sure it's rated for impact.

I hear you, Sam. I always wear safety glasses AND a face shield when grinding. And I gotta tell you, I learned the hard way. Had a cut-off wheel blow up on me once, sent a chunk right at my face. The shield took the hit, but my glasses underneath got scratched up. Good thing I had both. Also, make sure your glasses have anti-fog coating. I use the ones with the foam around the edges, they seem to fog less.

So, I'm still an apprentice and I've been using just the safety glasses. My foreman tells me to get a face shield. Is it really that necessary? I mean, I've seen videos of grinders kicking back, but I'm careful. Also, what about those mesh shields? I heard they don't fog up.

Tim, trust me, it's necessary. The kickback is one thing, but the discs can explode at any time, especially if you're using a worn or damaged disc. The mesh shields are okay, but they can obstruct your view a bit, and they might not stop fine dust. I'd go with a clear polycarbonate shield. And never skip the glasses under it - belt and suspenders. Better safe than sorry.
