Just scored a Makita grinder for $60 - too good to be true?

Hey everyone, was browsing FB Marketplace and found a Makita 4-1/2" angle grinder for only $60. Seller says it's lightly used and comes with 3 grinding wheels. I've been needing one for some metalwork projects but didn't want to drop $150+ on a new one. Anyone have experience with used Makitas? Should I jump on this or is it probably worn out?

Makita makes solid grinders for welding prep. For $60 with wheels, that's a steal IF it's in decent shape. Ask the seller if it's been used for cutting concrete or masonry - those abrasive materials can wear out the bearings faster. Also check the power cord for any damage and make sure the guard isn't cracked. I've run my Makita grinder hard for 5 years and it still purrs.

Ooh nice find! I have that exact model in my collection (blue Makita 9557PB). They're workhorses. Check the date code on the label - if it's less than 3 years old, definitely grab it. Also see if the spindle lock button works smoothly. Sometimes people overtighten disks and strip the threads. Bring a spare disk to test it before paying!

$60 is solid IF it works. But honestly, Harbor Freight has the Warrior grinder for $40 brand new with warranty. I've had mine 2 years and it's fine for occasional use. Unless you're grinding daily, the extra $20 might not be worth the risk of buying used. Just my 2 cents!

Thanks all! Greg - seller says it was just used for light metalwork, no concrete. Sarah - great tip about the spindle lock, I'll test that. Bob - I checked the Warrior but reviews say it vibrates a lot. Think I'm gonna grab this Makita tomorrow. Will update if it's a lemon!
