Hey folks, I'm finally building that deck I've been planning. I need a grinder for cutting down some metal brackets and maybe smoothing out a few welds on the frame. I'm on a budget but want something that'll last a few projects. Any suggestions? Corded or cordless?

For a deck build, I'd go corded for the extra power and no battery worries. The DeWalt DWE402 is a beast and won't break the bank. I've had mine for years. If you're set on cordless, Makita's 18V is solid, but you'll need a couple batteries.

Makita all the way! Their XAG04Z is the only way to go. I've used Makita for 20 years and never had one fail. Yeah, it's pricier, but you get what you pay for. Don't cheap out on a grinder – it's a safety tool.

If you're just cutting brackets and smoothing welds, you don't need a monster. I use a Porter-Cable PC760 for small jobs – it's cheap, light, and does the job. Save your cash for good cut-off wheels and flap discs. Also, get a pair of gloves and a face shield. I learned that the hard way.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with Bob's suggestion on the DeWalt DWE402, seems like a good balance. Tim, I'll consider Makita when I upgrade. And Wendy, solid advice on the PPE – already have a face shield. Appreciate it!
