Hey guys, I'm building a new deck and need to cut some steel brackets and maybe a few pieces of rebar. I don't have a grinder yet. What should I get? I'm on a budget, but don't want junk.

First off, PPE! Get a good face shield and gloves. For budget, look at the Makita 9557PB. It's a solid 4.5" with a paddle switch and decent power. But don't cheap out on disks - get some good Walter or Pferd ones.

I second the Makita. If you want something a bit more heavy duty for occasional rebar, maybe spring for the Metabo WEPBA-125 Quick. It's got more torque and the quick-change guard is nice. But if it's just brackets, the Makita will do.

Deck guy here - for brackets and rebar, a 4.5" is fine. I use the DeWalt DCG413B cordless and love it. No cord to trip over on the deck. But if you're set on corded, the Bosch GWS8-45 is bulletproof. Don't forget to use a grinding wheel for rebar, not a cut-off wheel.

I'd also recommend getting a grinding/cut-off combo pack of disks. Don't use the same wheel for both - that's how you get kickback. And always always always wear a full face shield. I almost lost an eye once with a grinder. Not fun.
