Hey everyone, I'm building a deck and need to cut some metal brackets and rebar. I've never owned an angle grinder before. What should I look for? I don't want to spend a fortune but need something reliable. Also, what discs do I need for cutting metal? Any tips for a newbie? Thanks!

Welcome to the grinder club! You definitely need one. For a deck build, a 4.5-inch grinder is perfect. I'd recommend a corded one for continuous power. Hitachi or DeWalt are solid. For cutting metal, get some thin cutting discs (1mm) and maybe a flap disc for grinding. Don't cheap out on discs, they can shatter. Also, pick up a face shield and gloves. You'll thank me later.

As a safety inspector, I must emphasize: WEAR PROPER PPE! Safety glasses alone won't cut it; use a full face shield. Also, make sure the guard is on the grinder. Never remove it. And check the disc for cracks before use. A grinder can kick back if you bind the disc. Keep both hands on the tool and be aware of your surroundings. Also, don't wear loose clothing. Stay safe!

If you're on a budget, check out the Ryobi or Porter Cable grinders. They're decent for occasional use. I've had my Ryobi for 3 years and it's still going. For discs, Harbor Freight has cheap ones but they wear out fast. I'd get a pack of Diablo or Avanti discs from Home Depot. Also, get a few different grits of flap discs for finishing. And don't forget a good extension cord if you're working far from an outlet.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check out the local hardware store this weekend. I'll definitely get a face shield and some quality discs. Appreciate the help!
