Hey all, just got a cheap angle grinder for a fence project. I know I need safety gear but don't wanna break the bank. What's the absolute minimum PPE I should get? Saw some budget face shields on Amazon for like $15 - are those any good?

Dan, listen to an old carpenter who's seen some things. MINIMUM? Full face shield, heavy leather gloves, and hearing protection. No exceptions. I've had discs shatter - a $15 shield saved my eyes. Don't cheap out on safety. Also, wear long sleeves but NO loose clothing!

DrillMaster's right about the basics, but I'll add: get a RESPIRATOR too if you're cutting masonry or metal. I only use 3M filters with my Milwaukee grinder - their P100 series is worth every penny. Brand matters for safety gear as much as tools!

Cool thread! I collect vintage grinders (got a 1970s Black & Decker on the shelf) so safety's evolved. Modern gear is way better. For new users: consider anti-vibration gloves if doing long sessions, and I love my Stihl forestry helmet/face shield combo - pricey but amazing for overhead work.

Thanks guys! Got the face shield and gloves. Rick - the 3M respirator is more than I wanted to spend but you convinced me. Pete, maybe I'll upgrade if this DIY bug keeps biting. Stay safe out there!
