Found a killer deal at the local big box store - a 7.5 amp angle grinder with a 4.5" wheel for $79, normally $129. I'm a weekend warrior, mostly cutting tile and some metal. Is this a steal or should I pass? Seems too good to be true.

Larry, that's a solid price for a name brand - but check the amps. 7.5 is fine for light duty, but if you're cutting thick steel all day, you'll want 11+. I've got a Makita 9557PB, cost me $110 a few years back, and it's a workhorse. For $79, if it's a major brand, grab it - but if it's a no-name, might be junk. What's the brand?

Ha, I remember when grinders were $50 and you could use them for years. Now they got all this safety crap. But seriously, $79 for a 4.5" is a decent deal. Just make sure it's got a paddle switch, not a slide switch - safer for one-handed use. I used one for 30 years on sites, and a paddle switch saves your fingers when the wheel kicks.

I'd say go for it, but check the warranty. If it's a big box store brand like Skil or Porter Cable, they usually have a 1-year warranty - fine for occasional use. But if you're going to abuse it, invest in a Dewalt or Milwaukee. Also, buy some extra discs - they wear out fast. And don't forget ear protection, these things scream.

Thanks guys! It's a Porter Cable, so not top-of-line but not junk. I'll grab it - can't beat that price. And I'll get some spare cutting wheels. Appreciate the advice, especially about the paddle switch. Will have to check that - if it's a slide switch, I'll keep it for bench use only. lol
