Hey everyone, I've got a Dewalt 20V max drill that's been fine for years, but now the battery won't charge. I've tried a different battery on the charger and it works, so the charger is fine. The battery is about 3 years old. Any ideas? Is it dead or can I fix it?

Sounds like the battery may have hit its lifespan. 3 years is pretty good for a li-ion pack. But before you toss it, check the contacts on the battery and the tool - sometimes they get dirty or corroded. Also, try putting it in the freezer for a bit (some people say that helps revive old batteries). If that doesn't work, it's likely time for a new one. I've had good luck with the 5Ah ones.

I agree with Dan, but I'll add that if you're handy, you can open it up and check the cells. Sometimes just one cell goes bad, and you can replace it if you're careful. But it's risky if you don't know what you're doing - you can damage the battery or worse. Also, don't freeze it! That can damage the cells further. If it's out of warranty, just get a new one. Makita batteries last longer IMO. :)

Hey, welcome to the forum! I've had this issue with my tools. A few things: are you sure the charger is putting out the right voltage? Could be the charger is faulty but still works on other batteries (unlikely but possible). Check with a multimeter. Also, some chargers have a reset button - check that. If not, as Dan said, check contacts. I've revived batteries by cleaning with a pencil eraser. If that fails, and you're comfortable, you can open it and check the cells. I've done it with a soldering iron, but it's not for everyone. Post a pic of the battery and charger if you can.
