Hey guys, I've got a Ryobi 40V mower that's been running fine for two seasons. Now the battery won't charge at all. The charger shows green light when plugged in, but when I put the battery in, it stays green and doesn't start charging. Tried cleaning the contacts but no luck. Any suggestions before I fork out for a new battery?

Classic issue! First off, check if the battery has a built-in thermal cutoff. If it's been sitting in the sun or you were mowing in hot weather, it might be too hot to charge. Let it cool down for an hour and try again. Also, try a different outlet (some chargers are picky). If that fails, it's likely a dead cell in the battery pack. You can try reviving it with a NiCd battery restorer, but for Li-ion, it's usually toast. BTW, Ryobi batteries have a 3-year warranty, so check your purchase date!

Don't toss it yet! I had the same thing happen with my Ryobi trimmer battery. Took it apart and found a broken solder joint on the BMS board. Re-soldered it and it's been fine for a year. Just be careful if you open it up - those batteries can shock you if you short something. Or you could buy a cheap replacement from Amazon for $40 vs $80 at Home Depot. Just make sure it's compatible with your charger.

Hey, I've seen this too! On my Ryobi, the charger LED stays green when the battery is already full or if the charger thinks it's full. Try tapping the battery gently while it's on the charger - sounds weird but sometimes the contacts get sticky. Also, if you have another Ryobi tool, test the battery in that to see if it works. If it runs the tool but won't charge, it's definitely a charger/battery communication issue. Good luck, man!
