Hey folks, I'm lookin' to replace my old gas trimmer with a cordless one. I'm already in the DeWalt 20V system with a drill and impact, but I hear Makita's 18V X2 stuff is solid too. For just home use, maybe 1/4 acre, which way should I go? I want something that'll last and not break the bank.

If you're already invested in DeWalt, stick with it unless you have a specific reason to switch. The DeWalt 20V trimmer (DCST920) has good power and the 5Ah batteries last a while. Makita's XUX02 is nice but you'd need new batts. Just make sure to get the model with the variable speed trigger and not the on/off switch. Also, check the head design – some Dewalts have a bump-feed that jams.

I've restored a few old trimmers, so I've seen both internals. DeWalt's gearbox is better sealed against debris. Makita's shaft is thicker, but their triggers fail more often. For a 1/4 acre, either will do. But since you have Dewalt batts, get the Dewalt and save the cash for a good line – I like the Oregon 0.095" Vortex. Also, consider the 60V version if you want more grunt; it uses the same batts.

Thanks guys! I think I'll go with the DeWalt 20V then. Steve, I'll make sure to get the variable speed one. Sam, good tip on the line. I'll order some Oregon. One more thing – any experience with the attachment capable version? I'm tempted by the edger attachment.

I've used the attachment capable Dewalt (DCST972). It works, but the shaft is a bit wobbly with the edger attachment. For occasional use it's fine, but if you edge a lot, get a dedicated edger. Makita's version is more rigid. Just my 2 cents.
