Alright fellas, I’m in the market for a new cordless string trimmer. I’m already invested in DeWalt 20V, but I see Makita has some 36V stuff that’s getting rave reviews. Anyone used both? Is it worth switching platforms?

Larry, I’ve run both. Makita’s 36V (two 18V) is a beast, but don’t overlook safety. The DeWalt has a better guard and the trigger lock is more intuitive. Makita’s auto-feed head jams more if you hit rocks. I’d say try holding both in store. Ergonomics matter when you’re swinging it for an hour.

I’ve had the DeWalt 60V (flexvolt) trimmer for 2 years now. It’s a monster. Cuts through thick weeds like nothing. The Makita 36V is good too, but IMHO DeWalt’s battery system is more versatile if you have other tools. Makita’s 18V line is solid but the 36V stuff is niche. Stick with DeWalt, Larry.

Thanks guys. Pete, I didn’t know there was a 60V DeWalt trimmer! That might be the sweet spot since I already have some 20V batts. Mike, good point about the guard. Safety first, right? I’ll check them out at HD this weekend.
