Hey folks, first time poster here. I'm in the market for a new string trimmer and I've narrowed it down to DeWalt or Makita. I already have a bunch of Dewalt batteries from my drill, but I've heard Makita is better for outdoor stuff. Any advice? I've got a half-acre lot, nothing crazy. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! Look, I've been a Makita guy for years. Their brushless motors are top notch, and the 36V trimmers are beasts. But honestly, if you already have Dewalt batteries, just stick with Dewalt. You'll save money on not buying new batteries and chargers. And Dewalt has been stepping up their outdoor gear game. My buddy has the 20V Max trimmer and it handles his yard fine. Go with what you got!

I agree with Pete on the battery compatibility. But also consider safety: both brands have good safety features, but watch out for the line you use. Make sure you're using the right gauge to avoid it breaking and flying off. Also, wear eye protection! I've seen too many close calls. And for the trimmer, make sure the guard is solid. DeWalt's guard is pretty sturdy, Makita's is too, but I prefer the one on the DeWalt.

I've got both actually. Use Dewalt drills at work, and I bought a Makita trimmer last year. Honestly, the Makita is quieter and smoother, but the Dewalt is cheaper if you already have batteries. For a half-acre, either will do fine. Just get a good line and keep the head balanced. And if you're doing edging, maybe get the attachment capable ones. Both have them. I'd say go with Dewalt for the battery convenience, but if you want the best performance, spend the extra on Makita.
