Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new cordless lawn mower and I've narrowed it down to DeWalt and Makita. I've been a DeWalt fan for years (my drill set hasn't let me down), but I've heard Makita's mowers are beasts. My yard is about a quarter acre, mostly flat with some thick patches. Which one would you guys trust to handle the job without bogging down? Also, any thoughts on battery compatibility with other tools?

I've got a Makita 36V mower and it's been solid for two seasons now. The dual battery system gives it plenty of torque, even in wet grass. I've never owned a DeWalt mower, but I know their 60V stuff is no joke. If you're already in the DeWalt ecosystem, I'd stick with them to avoid buying new batteries. Just check the amp hours – bigger batteries handle thicker grass better. Safety first: make sure the blade brake engages quickly, and don't mow in flip-flops!

I've collected both brands over the years, and honestly, it's a toss-up. DeWalt's 60V max is a beast, but it's heavy. My Makita 18V X2 (36V) feels lighter and more maneuverable. For a quarter acre, either will do. But if you're like me and have a ton of other tools, think about the battery platform. I have both, but that's just because I have a problem. Haha. I'd say go with whichever brand you have more batteries for. And check if the mower has a mulch/ bag option – that can make a difference in lawn health.

I've restored a few old houses with lawns that look like jungles, so I need a mower that can handle tall, thick grass without stalling. I tried a DeWalt 60V once and it clogged up on wet clippings. My Makita 36V has never clogged, even in damp conditions. Plus, the Makita has a variable speed trigger, which gives you more control. I also like that the Makita folds up for easy storage. If you're dealing with any slope, the self-propelled version is worth the extra cash. Just my two cents.

Thanks guys, this is really helpful! I've got a few DeWalt batteries already (20V and 60V), but they're older and might not hold a charge as well. I'm leaning toward DeWalt to stay in the same system, but the Makita's performance is tempting. I think I'll look into the battery adapters – I've seen some that let you use 20V batteries on Makita tools, not sure if it works the other way. But I'll probably test them both at the store. Appreciate the advice!
