Just scored a Ryobi 40V mower for $199 - too good to be true?

Hey folks, was browsing the local hardware store's clearance section and found a Ryobi 40V brushless mower marked down to $199 from $399. Box was a little dented but everything inside looks intact. I already have 3 corded mowers and 2 gas ones in my collection, but this battery-powered one caught my eye. Anyone have experience with these? Worth grabbing as a backup/light-duty mower?

Felix, at that price it's decent for residential use. I've used the Ryobi 40V line on some smaller jobs where clients wanted quiet operation. Battery life is okay - you'll get about 45 mins on a charge with the 6Ah battery, less if your grass is thick. Check if it includes the battery and charger - sometimes store returns are missing accessories. For $199 with battery, it's a steal. Without battery, you're looking at another $150+.

Ooh nice find! I don't do much lawn care (more of a workshop gal) but I borrowed my neighbor's similar model last summer when my push mower died. So much lighter than gas! The battery system is the same as their other 40V tools - I have the leaf blower and it's pretty reliable. If the box is just dented, I'd say go for it. Maybe test it in the store parking lot if they'll let you?

Thanks both! It does include the 6Ah battery and charger - sticker says 'open box return.' Steve, you think it would handle a quarter-acre lot with mostly flat terrain? Sarah, good call on testing - I'll ask if they have a demo area. My collection could use a modern battery-powered piece anyway. The gas ones are getting harder to maintain.

Quarter-acre should be fine if you mow regularly. Don't let the grass get too tall between cuts - battery mowers struggle with heavy growth. Keep the blade sharp (replace annually if you use it regularly). At that price, even if it lasts 3-4 seasons you're ahead. Just don't expect commercial-grade durability. And check Ryobi's warranty on open-box items - might be reduced.
