Best measuring tape for building a deck?

Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a deck in my backyard this spring and I need a good measuring tape. I've been using a cheap one from the hardware store but it keeps bending and the markings are fading. Any recommendations for a durable tape that can handle rough use? Also, would a laser measure be better for this kind of project?

For a deck, I'd stick with a good old-fashioned tape. Laser measures are fine for open spaces but they can be tricky with framing and joists. Look for a tape with a wide blade (1 inch or more) and a strong standout—at least 7 feet. Stanley FatMax is a classic choice. Also, get one with fractional markings; saves your brain when cutting.

FatMax is good but I'm all about the Craftsman tape. The 25-foot one with the rubber grip is my go-to. It's got a solid lock and the markings are etched, so they don't wear off. I've had mine for years. Laser? Nah, not for a deck. Too many shadows and you'll be squinting.

If you want to go pro, try the Lufkin Shockforce. That thing is built like a tank. I dropped mine off a 12-foot ladder and it still works perfect. The blade is coated so it resists wear. For a deck, you'll need the 25-foot. And yeah, skip the laser unless you're measuring diagonal spans.

Make sure whatever you get has a magnetic tip! It'll save you when you're working alone and need to hook onto a nail. Also, check that the lock doesn't slip—dangerous if it retracts while you're measuring. I've seen guys lose fingers. Stay safe and go with a name brand that has a good warranty.
