Hey everyone! I'm finally tackling a deck build this spring. I've got the lumber and fasteners sorted, but I need advice on measuring tools. I'm looking at laser distance measurers vs tape measures. I want something accurate for long spans. Any recommendations?

For a deck, get a good 25' or 30' tape measure with a standout that won't sag. I use a Stanley FatMax or the Milwaukee magnetic one. Laser is nice for quick rough measurements but not for marking cuts. Also grab a speed square and a chalk line for squaring the deck.

I second the tape measure. I have a DeWalt 30' and it's solid. For layout, a laser level is a lifesaver for making sure everything is level across the joists. Don't forget a good builder's square or a framing square for corners. And mark your tape with a pencil for repeated cuts!

Thanks! I have a speed square already. Sounds like I need a quality tape and a chalk line. Should I splurge on a laser level? I see some for $50 and some for $300. Not sure what's worth it.

For a one-time deck build, a $50-100 self-leveling laser is fine. You don't need the super fancy ones with green beams or pulse modes. Just make sure the accuracy is within 1/8" at 50'. That'll get the job done.
