Hey guys, planning to build a 12x16 deck next month. I got a circular saw and a drill but my old tape measure is busted. Should I just grab any 25ft from the hardware store or is there something better for layout like a digital or self-locking one? Thanks!

For a deck, get a 25ft with a strong standout (at least 10-11ft). That way you can measure diagonals solo. I use the Stanley FatMax, it’s tough and locks tight. If you’re doing joist layout, also grab a speed square and a chalk line.

I second the FatMax, but check out the Tajima if you want a smooth return. I’ve got like 5 tapes lol. Also, for accuracy on long runs, consider a laser measure. I got a Bosch GLM50 for my last deck and it was sweet for squareness checks.

For the price, you can't beat a standard 25ft Stanley PowerLock. Its easy to read and cheap enough to replace if it gets wet. Just remember to mark your joists with a pencil, not a nail. And yeah, a chalk line is a must for straight lines.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with the FatMax and pick up a chalk line. Maybe I'll look into a laser later. Appreciate the tips!
