Alright folks, I'm in the market for a self-leveling cross-line laser. I've been eyeing the DeWalt DW088K and the Makita SK104DZ. I'm a carpenter, so I need something that can take a bit of a beating. Anyone have experience with either? I'm leaning DeWalt 'cause I already have their batteries, but I've heard Makita's accuracy is spot on.

Hey Matt, I've had the DeWalt for about two years now. It's been solid, took a few knocks and still holds calibration. But I've used my buddy's Makita and it seems more precise on longer runs. The one thing that ticks me off about the DeWalt is the magnetic bracket - it's a bit weak. If you're working around metal studs, it's a pain. What's your typical project scale?

Not a carpenter but I've got the Makita SK104DZ in my garage for setting up workbenches and shelving. The green beam is way easier to see in bright conditions compared to the red on DeWalt. Also, the IP54 rating gives a bit more dust/water resistance. But if you're already in the DeWalt system, it's hard to justify a new charger. Have you considered the DeWalt with a different bracket? I think there's a newer model out.

Yeah, I saw the newer one, but it's more expensive. I do mostly residential framing and trim, distances around 20-30 feet. Dave, the magnet issue bugs me - I'm always on ladders and setting up on metal track. Sarah, good point about the green beam. I might just go with the Makita and bite the bullet on the batteries. Thanks for the info guys!

No problem! If you go Makita, grab the one with the batteries included (the SK104DZ is bare tool). Also, check out the Bosch GLL3-330CG if you want a third option - it's got a 360° line, which is a game changer for some folks. But it's pricey. Let us know what you decide!
