Hey folks, I'm finally upgrading from my old tape measure and looking at laser distance measures. I've narrowed it down to DeWalt DW03050 and Makita LD060P. Both seem popular, but I'm torn! I mostly do weekend projects - framing, deck building, room layouts. Anyone have hands-on experience with either? DeWalt's cheaper by about $20 at my local store, but Makita claims better accuracy. Worth the extra cash?

Safety first, Hank! Both brands meet basic standards, but check the IP ratings if you work in dusty/damp conditions. Makita LD060P has IP54 vs DeWalt's IP65 - ironically DeWalt wins on dust/water resistance here despite being cheaper. Also consider display visibility in bright light. I've inspected job sites where workers struggled with dim displays. Personally, I'd prioritize clear readouts over minor accuracy differences for DIY use.

Owned both! DeWalt's button layout is more intuitive IMO - single button for on/measure vs Makita's separate buttons. But Makita's continuous measurement mode is slick for quick scans. Battery life: DeWalt uses 2 AAA, Makita uses 2 AA. Makita lasted me 6 months of regular use vs 4 for DeWalt. Pro tip: DeWalt's magnetic strip is stronger if you mount it on metal surfaces. For pure value, DeWalt wins. For features, Makita.

Thanks guys! Gary - how noticeable was the accuracy difference in real use? Will - good call on the display, my garage has terrible lighting. Leaning toward DeWalt for the magnetic strip (always losing my tools!) and price. Anyone know if DeWalt's warranty is better? Saw some reviews about Makita's customer service being slow.

Warranty: Both offer 3-year limited. DeWalt has more service centers nationally. Regarding accuracy - for DIY, both exceed what you'll need. Human error (holding steady, target surface) matters more than the ±1/16" vs ±1/32" specs. If budget allows, get whichever feels better in hand. Ergonomics prevent fatigue and mistakes. Try them at the store if possible!
