Hey guys, looking to pick up a laser distance measurer for framing and layout. I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt DW03050 and the Makita LD080P. Both are about $100, but I've heard mixed reviews on battery life and accuracy. Anyone have real world experience with either? Is the Makita worth the extra $20 or so?

I got the Makita LD080P last year. It's been solid, but it chugs batteries like crazy. I swapped to rechargables which helped. Accuracy is spot on for interior work. If you can wait, sometimes Home Depot has a deal with an extra battery. The DeWalt uses 2 AAAs vs the Makita's 2 AAs, so the Makita probably lasts longer per set. For $20, I'd go Makita.

Don't forget the safety aspect. Both are Class 2 lasers, but the Makita has a better tripod mount if you're using it overhead. I also like the backlit display on the DeWalt – easier to read in bright sun. But whichever you get, wear your laser goggles. I've seen too many guys squinting. Also, the dust resistance is better on the Makita (IP54 vs IP54 actually, both same). So really it's about feel.

I've had the DeWalt DW03050 for 3 years. It's been dropped off a ladder twice and still works. The magnet on the back is strong – sticks to steel studs no problem. The Makita's magnet is weaker. But the real deal is the Bluetooth on the Makita connects to their app for layout on your phone. Not sure if you care about that. For just raw distance, DeWalt is simpler and tougher.

If you're anal about precision like me, get the Makita. It measures down to 1/16″ consistently, while the DeWalt sometimes rounds up to 1/8″ at longer ranges (over 50ft). I tested both side by side on a job site. Also the Makita has a continuous measurement mode that's smoother. So if you're doing layout for cabinets, Makita. For general construction, DeWalt saves you a few bucks.
