Hey all, my Starrett digital caliper (had it for years) is acting up. The numbers jump around like crazy when I slide it. Sometimes it shows random values, sometimes it freezes. Battery is new. I cleaned the jaws but no luck. Any ideas? I rely on this thing for precise pipe measurements. Thanks.

Sounds like the scale is dirty or the slider contacts are worn. Try cleaning the scale with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. If that doesn't work, might be time for a new one. I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight for $20 and it's been fine for occasional use.

Starrett? Those are supposed to be top-notch. I've had similar issues with my Mitutoyo when sawdust got inside. Take it apart carefully and blow out the dust with compressed air. Also check the battery contacts for corrosion. If it's still under warranty, send it in. Otherwise, a new one might be cheaper than repair.

I had the same problem! Turns out my battery was low even though it was 'new' from the pack. Try another battery, preferably a fresh name-brand one. Also, make sure the battery compartment is clean. If all else fails, percussive maintenance sometimes works (gentle tap on the bench). Good luck!
