Do I really need safety glasses for measuring? (Long story)

So I was measuring some scrap wood for a shelf, just using my tape and a square. I had to kneel down and get eye level with the mark, and as I leaned in, the tape snapped back and whipped me right across the face. Caught me just below the eye. Luckily no damage, but damn that stung. I know, I know, should've worn safety glasses. But who wears those just for measuring? Anyone else had close calls with measuring tools? Or do you always wear PPE even for simple stuff?

Ha! Tell me about it. I've had my tape snap back and hit me in the chin, but never the eye. That's a good reminder though. I usually wear glasses when I'm doing any kind of cutting or drilling, but for measuring I don't either. But yeah, I've had a few close calls with the little retractable blades. I'm gonna start wearing them now. Thanks for the tip, Chris.

I always wear safety glasses, no exceptions. Even for measuring. You never know when a nail might pop out of a stud or something. I've seen too many guys lose an eye on the job. My uncle lost an eye to a rusty nail that flicked up from a floor when he was measuring. So yeah, always wear them. And good on you for sharing, Chris. Too many folks think it's only power tools that need PPE.

I'm with Hank. I've got a pair of cheap safety glasses that I wear almost all the time in the shop. They're comfortable enough that I forget I have them on. And honestly, if you're measuring something that might have tension (like a tape measure), you should definitely protect your eyes. Plus, it sets a good example for the kids or any newbies. Better safe than sorry.
