Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard (first time doing something this big). I need a reliable tape measure and a framing square. I don't want to spend a fortune but I also don't want junk that'll break after a few uses. What do you guys recommend?

For a deck, get a 25ft FatMax tape. Seriously, it's the standard for a reason - stands up to drops, has a nice standout, and the hook is dead-on. For the square, don't mess around with a cheap aluminum one; get a Swanson Speed Square (the big one). It's like 15 bucks and does everything. Also, grab a good chalk line for layout.

I second the FatMax. But if you want something lighter, check out the Stanley Powerlock. I've used one for years building cabinets and it's still accurate. For a square, I like the Irwin rafter square - it's marked for rafter cuts too, but for a deck you'll mostly use it for checking corners. Also, don't forget a 4ft level for the posts!

For a deck, I'd splurge a little on a Lufkin tape with the fractional markings. Makes figuring out 5/16ths easier if you're not used to it. And avoid the magnetic tip tapes - they can mess up on a deck with lots of nails. For the square, the Swanson is gold, but if you want a framing square, the Johnson 8x12 is solid and cheap.
