Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I need a good tape measure. I've been using a cheap 25-footer, but it keeps bending and the hook is loose. What do you all recommend? I want something accurate and durable.

For a deck, you want a 25' or 30' tape with a wide blade (1-1/4 inch). The FatMax by Stanley is a classic – tough as nails and the blade stands out 11 feet. I've used mine for years. Also look at Lufkin Nite Eye if you work in low light. Don't skimp on the tape, it's your most used tool.

I get by with a Komelon $10 tape from the hardware store. Works fine for occasional use. But if you're doing the whole deck, maybe invest in a decent one. Pete's FatMax is solid, but check Amazon for deals. Also, a magnetic hook is worth the extra dollar.

Whatever you get, make sure the hook is tight and replace it if it gets loose! I've seen guys cut boards wrong because the hook was bent. Also, consider a tape that has a protective coating to resist rust. And watch your fingers – a retracting tape can slice you up. Safety first.

Thanks guys! I think I'll go with the FatMax based on Pete's and Tim's advice. And Carl, good point about the hook – I'll check it regularly. Appreciate the help!
