Just read this article about the tuna can test for watering your lawn. Sounds like a simple trick, but could it really make that big of a difference? Anyone tried it?

I've used it for years, honestly it's spot on. The key is setting out a few cans, not just one, to get an even reading. And don't forget to account for sprinkler overlap. It's a cheap way to avoid overwatering, which can kill your grass faster than underwatering.

Interesting! I've just been eyeballing it, probably why my lawn has dead spots. Gonna try this out. One question: do you use any old tuna can or does it have to be a specific size?

The standard is a 5 oz can, but honestly any similar container works. The point is to measure water depth, so as long as it's consistent, you're good. Also, check your sprinkler heads for even distribution - that's where a lot of problems start.
