Hey all, I picked up a cheap digital caliper from HF last month and it's been making this weird grinding noise when I slide the jaw. Also the readings jump around like crazy. I'm on a tight budget so I can't afford a fancy Mitutoyo. Any ideas? I tried new batteries but no luck. Pls help!

Rick, those cheap calipers are notorious for that. The grinding is probably the rack and pinion getting grit in it. Take it apart (carefully!) and clean with some electronics cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Also, the jumpy readings could be a loose battery contact. Sometimes the little spring tab gets bent. If you're lucky, you can bend it back. But honestly, for $20, you might just be better off returning it. I've had good luck with the iGaging ones for a bit more.

I've got a collection of calipers, from cheap to Starrett. The cheap ones often have a plastic gear that wears out. The grinding could be the gear skipping teeth. If you open it up, check for any plastic shavings. If that's the case, it's toast. But hey, sometimes you can find a used Mitutoyo on eBay for $50-60 if you keep an eye out. Worth the investment if you do a lot of measuring. For now, though, try cleaning it first like Steve said. Also, make sure the battery is fresh and the right type (LR44 usually). Good luck!

Thanks guys! I'll try cleaning it tonight. If that doesn't work, I'll return it. I did see a used Mitutoyo on eBay but it's a bit out of my budget right now. Maybe I'll save up. Appreciate the help!

No problem, Rick. Let us know how it goes. If you do decide to upgrade, the iGaging Absolute Origin is a solid budget option. I've been using mine for years without issues. And Bob, I'm jealous of your Starrett collection! Maybe one day.
