Hey all, starting a deck build next week. Need a good pair of pliers for pulling nails, cutting wire, and general deck work. I’ve got a cheap pair now but they slip and hurt my hands. What do you pros recommend? Budget around $50.

For deck work, get a good set of linesman pliers. I use Klein’s, they’re tough as nails and the crimping part is handy for electrical. Also grab a pair of tongue-and-groove for the bolts. You won’t regret it.

Gotta disagree with Paul on linesman for pulling nails. Get a dedicated nail puller or a cat’s paw. For precision, I’d say Knipex Cobra pliers – they bite into anything and don’t slip. Pricey but worth it.

Hank’s right about Knipex, but for budget, check out Channellock’s 9.5-inch tongue and groove. They’re like $25 and last forever. Also, IRWIN Vise-Grip locking pliers are a must for stubborn nails.

Fair point on the nail puller, Hank. I still think a good linesman does double duty, but if you’ve got the cash, get a dedicated set for each job. Rick, don’t skimp – your hands will thank you.
