Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this spring. I've got most of the big tools sorted but I'm stuck on pliers. I need something for gripping, twisting wire, and maybe pulling nails. I've got a cheap set from the hardware store that keeps slipping. What do you guys recommend? Not trying to break the bank but I want something that'll last.

For deck building, precision matters. I'd get a set of Knipex Cobras for gripping and a pair of Engineers pliers for wire work. The Cobras have a self-locking mechanism that isn't just hype—it really gives you a perfect grip every time, no slipping. For nail pulling, get a proper cat's paw or a wrecking bar, pliers aren't ideal for that. Stay away from cheap stamped steel pliers, they'll deform on the first hard pull.

I'm a Milwaukee guy all the way. Their 9-Inch Linesman pliers are beastly for twisting heavy wire and they have a built-in crimper. For gripping, get the Milwaukee channel locks, they're tough as nails. I've used them on plumbing jobs for years and they still work like new. But I agree with DrillMaster, don't use pliers for nails, get a proper nail puller.

Thanks for the tips! I'll look into the Knipex and Milwaukee options. And yeah, I'll grab a cat's paw too. One more thing—any thoughts on Klein tools? I see them at the electrical supply but not sure if they're any good for general use.

Klein is solid for electrical work, but their pliers are specialized—great for cutting and bending wire, but not the best for heavy gripping on deck screws or nails. Stick with Knipex or Milwaukee for versatility. Also, don't forget to get a good pair of needle-nose for those tight spots between joists.
