Do New Harley Tool Kits Still Cut the Mustard?

Just read the article about Harley tool kits. I remember when my dad bought a new Softail back in '98, that little pouch had everything you needed for roadside fixes. Now they say they're basic, almost token. What's your take? Do you carry extra tools?

Them factory kits were always minimal. I've owned a few Harleys over the years, and I always ended up carrying a real set of wrenches and a multi-tool. Those little kits are good for a few things, but if you're on a long trip, you better have more. I remember a buddy got stranded with a loose battery cable, and the tiny wrench that came with the bike was useless. I had to loan him mine.

As a safety inspector, I see a lot of riders who rely on that factory kit. They're fine for basic stuff, but you should always carry a decent set of pliers and a small socket set. And check your bike before you ride. That said, Harley's been cheapening them for years. I think the new ones don't even have a spark plug socket. Sigh.
