Man, I remember when my old man bought his '78 Shovelhead and that tool kit was like a treasure chest. Nowadays they probably expect you to call a tow truck if you break down. I get it, bikes are more reliable, but a few wrenches and a screwdriver can save your hide on a long ride. What's the world coming to?

Honestly, I think it's a shame. I'm not a Harley guy, but I've always appreciated the idea of a tool kit with your vehicle. It's like the manufacturer saying 'we trust you to fix basic stuff'. My buddy has a Sportster and he had to rig his own kit with a roll of duct tape and a multi-tool. Ridiculous.

I restore old Harleys, and the original tool kits are actually collectible. You see complete ones on eBay for big bucks. The new ones? Probably those cheap Allen wrenches and a spark plug socket. But here's the thing: if you're riding a modern Harley, you're not doing roadside engine rebuilds. The key is to check your bike before you ride and carry what you need for YOUR bike. I still carry a small kit, but it's tailored—not some generic junk.

As a contractor, I see the same thing with power tools these days. Everything is lighter, stronger, but they don't come with repair parts or extra brushes. It's all 'bring it to the service center'. I think it's a mix: people don't wrench as much, and tech is more complex. But for a motorcycle, you should at least have the basics to fix a flat or tighten a loose bolt. I'd bet the insurance company is happier if you're not on the side of the road playing mechanic in the dark.
