Hey all, I've got a pair of Knipex pliers that I've had for years, and suddenly they're not gripping like they used to. The jaws seem to slip when I try to grip tight. I've cleaned them and oiled the joint, but it's not helping. Any ideas what might be wrong or how to fix it? They're my favorite pair and I don't want to replace them if I can help it.

Sounds like the teeth on the jaws might be worn out. Check if they're still sharp or if they've smoothed over. Sometimes those can get rounded from use, especially if you've been gripping on hard metal. If that's the case, you might need to replace the jaws or the whole pliers. Also, make sure you're not using them for wire cutting - that can damage the grip.

Hey TinkerTom, I've had this happen with my old Channel Locks. Before you toss them, check the rivet pin that holds the jaws together. If it's loose, the jaws won't align right and they'll slip. You can tap it with a hammer to tighten it up while on a hard surface. Also, make sure the adjustment mechanism isn't slipping - some of those have a spring that can wear out. If it's a Knipex, they have a great warranty, so you might be able to get them replaced for free.

Don't buy a new pair yet! I've saved plenty of tools with a little DIY. Get some fine grit sandpaper or a diamond file and carefully sharpen the teeth on the jaws. Just a few passes on each tooth can make a world of difference. Also, check the pivot screw - if it's adjustable, tighten it just a bit. But be careful not to overtighten or it'll bind. Hope that helps! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys! I'll check the rivet pin and try the sandpaper trick. I hadn't thought about the warranty, so I might look into that if it doesn't work. Appreciate the advice!
