Hey everyone, I've got a pair of slip-joint pliers that suddenly won't close all the way. They've worked fine for months, but now they're stuck open about half an inch. I tried oiling the joint, but no luck. Anyone know what's going on or how to fix it?

Hey there! Safety first - before you go prying anything, make sure they're not under tension. Could be a burr or some debris in the joint. Have you tried tapping the pivot pin gently with a hammer? Sometimes they get a little off. Also, check if the adjustment mechanism on the slip joint is stuck. A good clean with some degreaser and a wire brush might do the trick.

Don't rush to buy new ones! I've fixed pliers like that by just soaking them in WD-40 overnight and then working them back and forth. Sometimes rust gets in the works. If that doesn't work, try clamping them in a vise and giving the pivot a little tap. Works most times. And hey, if you gotta replace, check out the ones at Harbor Freight - cheap and they've lasted me years.

I've seen this a lot on job sites. Usually it's mineral buildup from cutting wire or from getting wet. Take 'em apart if you can - there's usually a screw or rivet. Clean the parts, file down any rough spots, and grease 'em up with some lithium grease. If it's a rivet, you might need to peen it back into place. If you're not comfortable doing that, just get a new pair - I recommend Knipex, they're my go-to.

Thanks all! I'll try the WD-40 first, then maybe take them apart. Appreciate the advice! I'll let you know how it goes.
