Hey everyone, I'm about to start building a deck in my backyard. I need a good set of pliers for various tasks - cutting wire, gripping nails, maybe bending some brackets. I've got a basic pair but they're not cutting it. What's a solid set that won't break the bank but will last?

You gotta check out the Knipex linesman pliers. They're pricey but they'll outlive you. I've got like 4 pairs scattered around my shop. The cutting edge is super sharp and they grip like a vice. Worth every penny if you're serious about your tools.

I'll second Knipex, but also look at the Irwin Vise-Grip linesman pliers. They're a bit cheaper and still great. But for me, precision is key. Make sure you get a pair with a nice, tight joint - you don't want any wobble. And if you're going to be pulling nails, a separate nail puller might be better than using your pliers.

I'm a weekend warrior so I know budget matters. I got a set from Harbor Freight for like $15 and they've been fine for my projects. Not fancy, but they do the job. If you're just doing a deck, you don't need top-of-the-line. Spend the extra money on good lumber or a nice drill.

Since I restore old tools, I've seen a lot. I'd recommend looking for a pair of USA-made Channellock pliers at a flea market or online - they're tanks. Or if you want new, the DeWalt linesman pliers are solid and they have a nice grip. Whatever you get, make sure to oil the joint occasionally and they'll last forever.
