Hey guys, I need to clean my 20x12 deck before staining it. It's got some mildew and old stain flaking off. I've got a cheap electric washer that barely works. Looking to upgrade to something that won't break the bank but gets the job done. Any recommendations? I've seen a lot about gas vs electric, but I'm a weekend warrior not a pro.

Hey Steve! For a deck, I'd say go with an electric with at least 2000 PSI and 1.5 GPM. I use a Karcher K5 and it does great on my deck. Gas is overkill and more maintenance. Get a surface cleaner attachment too - saves time and makes it even. Just be careful not to blast too close or you'll gouge the wood.

I disagree Chris. If you're doing a deck, you want something that can handle the grime. I use a 3000 PSI gas unit on my jobs. But for Steve, I'd say the Ryobi RY142022 is a good middle ground - 2200 PSI, electric, and under $200. Use a wide fan tip and keep moving. And yeah, surface cleaner is a must. Also, don't forget to wear eye pro and shoes - not flip flops!

I'm on a budget so I got the Sun Joe SPX3000. It's electric, 2030 PSI, and like $130. Works fine for my deck and driveway. Just make sure to use the right nozzle and don't get too close. Also, buy some deck cleaner solution instead of just water - makes a big difference. Oh, and don't forget to seal after it dries!
