Hey guys, I'm planning to clean and reseal my 500 sq ft cedar deck this spring. It's got some mildew and grayed wood. Should I buy a pressure washer or just rent one? Budget ~$300. I've never used one before. Any tips?

For a 500 sq ft deck, buying might be worth it if you plan to use it again. At $300, look for a gas-powered unit with at least 2800 PSI and 2.5 GPM. Electric ones are cheaper but slower. Get a surface cleaner attachment or you'll risk gouging the wood. Also use a wide nozzle (40°) and keep the wand moving. Don't get too close!

I'd actually recommend renting a commercial-grade one for the day. $50-70 and you'll get way more power than a $300 consumer model. Plus you don't have to store it. For cedar, use a wood cleaner first (like Wolman) and soft wash if possible. High pressure can damage the fibers. After washing, let it dry 48 hours before staining.

Safety first! Pressure washers are no joke. Always wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes. Never point it at people or pets. If you buy, get one with a low-pressure detergent injection system. And check the oil level before starting. For deck cleaning, start with a fan tip and test an inconspicuous area. I've seen too many people blast the grain right off.
