Hey all, I'm finally tackling my old cedar deck this spring. It's got years of grime and some peeling stain. I need a pressure washer that can handle the job without destroying the wood. Budget around $400. What should I get? I'm leaning towards electric for noise reasons but open to gas.

Go Makita. Their cordless 36V pressure washer is the bomb. I've used it on my deck and it's got plenty of power, plus no cords or gas. Just grab some extra batteries. Trust me, you won't regret it.

For a deck, you need at least 3000 PSI and around 2.5 GPM. Electric units usually lag behind in flow rate. I'd recommend a gas Honda engine like a Simpson. But if you're set on electric, get a Dewalt DWpw2400. It's 2400 PSI and 1.2 GPM, decent for light duty. Also, use a surface cleaner attachment to avoid gouging.

Pay attention to the nozzle and technique. Use a wide fan (40 or 45 degree) and keep the tip at least 12 inches from the wood. Pressure wash along the grain, not against. If you go too aggressive, you'll leave scars. I'd actually recommend a soft wash first with a bleach solution, then rinse with low pressure. Your deck will thank you.

Don't forget safety! Wear eye protection and closed-toe shoes. The water spray can bounce debris into your face. Also, if you use a gas washer, make sure it's ventilated. And never point the wand at people or pets. Happy washing!
