Hey folks, I'm finally getting around to refinishing my 15-year-old cedar deck this summer. It's got years of grime, some mildew in shady spots, and old stain flaking off. I know I need to pressure wash it before sanding and restaining, but I've never owned one. What PSI/GPM should I be looking at? Don't want to damage the wood but need enough power to clean it properly. Budget around $300-400. Thanks!

Good timing Sam! I just did my pressure treated deck last month. DO NOT get anything over 2000 PSI for wood - you'll gouge it. I used a 1700 PSI electric model (Greenworks from Home Depot) and it worked perfect. Electric is quieter and fine for decks. Gas ones are overkill unless you're doing driveways too. Tip: use the 25-degree nozzle, keep it moving, and don't get too close! I learned the hard way on a test board lol.

Agree with Bob on the PSI. I'd add - pay attention to GPM (gallons per minute) too. Higher GPM cleans faster even at lower pressure. My Sun Joe 2030 is 2030 PSI (but adjustable) and 1.76 GPM - cleaned my deck in half a day. Also get one with a soap applicator if you want to use deck cleaner first. And wear safety glasses! The kickback can send debris flying.

Thanks both! So electric around 1700-2000 PSI, adjustable if possible. Bob - did you use a deck cleaner first or just water? Larry - good call on the glasses, almost forgot that. Any brands to avoid? Saw some cheap ones on Amazon with mixed reviews.

Yeah I used a deck brightener/cleaner first (let it soak 10 mins then rinsed). Made a huge difference on the mildew. As for brands - stick with known ones like Greenworks, Sun Joe, Ryobi. Avoid the super cheap no-names, they break fast. Also get a 25-50 ft hose, the ones included are usually too short. Good luck and post pics when done!
