Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a small deck in my backyard (about 10x10 feet). I need to cut some metal brackets and maybe do some light grinding on screws. I've never owned a rotary tool before, but I see Dremel and other brands. What should I get? I don't want to overspend but need something reliable.

If you want precision, get a Dremel 4000 with the variable speed. For metal brackets, you need the reinforced cutting discs. Also, grab a flex shaft attachment for better control. Don't cheap out on the accessories, they matter more than the tool itself.

Precision is overkill for a deck. Go with a corded rotary tool like the DeWalt DW660. More power, cheaper, and you don't have to worry about battery life. I've used mine for years for cutting and grinding. Just wear eye protection.

I'm a gearhead so I have multiple rotary tools. For a deck, I'd actually recommend a Dremel 8220 cordless. It's good for tight spots and you can move around freely. But if you're cutting a lot of metal, corded is better. I'd say get the Dremel 4000 if you ever plan to do fine work later.

Good point Dan. Dave, consider what else you might use it for. If it's just deck, Hammer's idea is solid. But if you think you'll do more detailed stuff later, invest in a Dremel. I use mine for everything from model painting to cutting tiles.
